Solar panel maintenance schedule: what a PV system needs, and when

A working solar panel maintenance schedule has four layers: continuous monitoring review, cleaning on a cadence the site's conditions dictate, an annual inspection covering the array, inverter, and connections, and manufacturer-specified service for inverters and batteries. The four layers of a solar maintenance schedule

Continuous: monitoring review. Production data is the cheapest inspection you'll ever run. Someone — the owner, or you under contract — should be looking at expected-vs-actual regularly, because a string that quietly dropped out in March gets found in March instead of at the annual visit. Underperformance flagged by monitoring is what triggers an unscheduled service call; everything below is what prevents one.

As-conditions-dictate: cleaning. There is no honest universal cleaning interval. Rain-washed suburban roofs may need little; dusty agricultural sites, pollen-heavy springs, bird-heavy coastlines, and low-tilt arrays need more. Set the cadence from the site's soiling reality and the production data — then put it on the schedule, because "when it looks dirty" is how cleanings don't happen.

Annual: the inspection visit. Once a year, eyes and hands on the system: visual check of modules for damage or hot-spot discoloration, racking and fastener condition, wire management and conduit, signs of pest intrusion, vegetation encroachment, inverter error logs, and measured values compared against the commissioning baseline. Findings become a deficiency list with photos; deficiencies become quotes.

Per manufacturer: inverter and battery service. Inverters and batteries carry their own service requirements and warranty conditions — filters, firmware, torque checks, thermal environment. Follow the book: the warranty depends on it, and the inverter is the component most likely to need replacement inside the system's life.
